Frequently Asked Questions about the therapy experience

What can I expect in my first session?

Our first session is focused and intentional. We’ll clarify what’s bringing you in, define what you want to change or improve, and begin mapping out a direction for our work. You can expect both space to share, and thoughtful questions to help us get clear quickly.

Do I need to know exactly what I want to work on before starting therapy?

You don’t need perfect clarity—but having a general sense that you’re ready for change is a strong starting point. We’ll refine your goals together and turn them into something concrete and actionable.

How long does therapy usually take?

That depends on how focused your goals are and how actively you engage between sessions. Clients who reflect, apply insights, and stay consistent often begin to see meaningful shifts sooner. We’ll keep the process goal-oriented and regularly evaluate progress.

How often will we meet?

Weekly to every other week sessions are recommended to maintain momentum, especially at the beginning. Consistency helps us build depth and create real, lasting change. Over time we can move to monthly or every 6-8 weeks for maintenance and check-ins.

Is everything I share confidential?

Yes, with a few legal exceptions. Confidentiality is essential to creating a space where you can be open and direct. We’ll review the specific limits together, so everything is clear from the start.

What if I feel uncomfortable talking about certain things?

Growth often involves some level of discomfort. That said, you’re always in control of what you share and when. We’ll approach difficult topics in a way that feels manageable while still moving forward.

What if I don’t feel a connection or it’s not a good fit?

A strong working relationship matters. If something feels off, we’ll address it directly. Open feedback helps us either strengthen the work or determine if a different fit would better support your goals.

Do you offer virtual or in-person sessions?

I currently offer telehealth/virtual sessions throughout Colorado and have in-person options coming soon in the Grand Junction, CO area.

How do I prepare for a session?

Take a few minutes beforehand to reflect on what stood out during your week—patterns, challenges, or wins. Clients who come in with even a small amount of intention tend to get more out of each session.

What should I do between sessions?

This is where much of the progress happens. You may practice new strategies, reflect on insights, or experiment with different ways of responding to situations. Therapy works best when it extends into your daily life.

What if I need support between sessions?

For non-urgent matters, you can contact me via the client portal. If you’re in immediate need of support, please use the following local crisis information:

Is therapy only for serious mental health issues?

Not at all. Many clients come in because they want to function at a higher level—improving relationships, managing stress more effectively, or gaining clarity and direction.

How do I know if therapy is working?

You’ll likely notice changes in how you think, respond, and make decisions. Progress often shows up as increased awareness, more intentional actions, and the ability to handle challenges differently. We’ll track this together so you can see the shifts clearly.
